Curriculum & Current Focus

At Matarau School, we are committed to helping each student discover their ideal journey to Secondary School. Our approach emphasises their strengths, addresses any areas for improvement, and fosters confidence and personal growth.

In our Year 7 and 8 curriculum, students experience a rich combination of academic, cultural, and practical learning. Core subjects are designed to challenge students, with the option to participate in the internationally recognised Cambridge Programme, which lays a solid foundation in Maths and English. This programme not only promotes academic excellence but also nurtures independent, confident learners who are well-prepared for future challenges.

We maintain small class sizes to enhance learning experiences. Each day begins with Whanau classes, followed by rotations in various subjects. Our curriculum includes a strong focus on English and Maths while ensuring a balanced education that encompasses Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, The Arts, and Language Learning.

Academic Enrichement

We encourage students to enter a range of competitions that offer them a chance to engage deeply with these subjects, hone their skills, and showcase their talents.

Mathex

This Maths Competition is an exhilarating event designed for teams of four students to showcase their math skills in a fast-paced environment. Students engage in a variety of challenging problems that test their ability to think critically and work collaboratively under pressure. It’s a fantastic opportunity for young mathematicians to demonstrate their problem-solving abilities while having fun and competing against peers from different schools.

Lit Quiz

The Lit Quiz Competition is an exciting event where teams of four students come together to test their knowledge of literature through fun trivia rounds. Participants will face questions about famous authors, classic novels, poetry, and nursery rhymes, making it a perfect opportunity to showcase what they know while learning new facts about the world of books. This competition fosters teamwork and encourages a love for reading and literature among students.

Debating

Seniors can choose to participate in the interschool debating competition in Whangarei. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills. Students engage in structured arguments on various topics, which encourages them to research thoroughly and articulate their opinions clearly. Each debate typically consists of teams presenting their arguments, followed by rebuttals that challenge opposing views.

Writers Festival

The Writers Festival in Auckland celebrates literature and the art of writing. Designed for students in Years 7 and 8, this festival offers a unique opportunity to meet authors, participate in workshops, and engage in discussions about storytelling and creativity. Young writers can learn valuable skills from established authors, discover new genres, and share their own writing with peers. With various activities, including readings, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, the festival fosters a love for literature and inspires students to explore their own voices as writers.

Specialist Technology

In Year 7 and 8, our students travel off-site to Hukerenui Technology Centre once a week, where they engage with technology through hands-on projects that enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills.

Soft materials

Exploring soft materials through projects like making soft toys, bags, and pillows encourages students to express their artistic talents. They also learn about textiles and sewing techniques during these projects.

Hard Materials

Working with hard materials; designing and making items such as bench seats and planter boxes, allows students to develop practical skills in design and construction.

Food Tech

Food technology offers valuable lessons in nutrition and cooking. This promotes healthy eating habits and fosters independence in students.

The Arts

Production

Every even year, our senior school puts on an incredible school production during Term 3.

This event showcases the talents of our students, from acting and singing to set design and stage management. Students work diligently for months, rehearsing lines, perfecting choreography, and crafting an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. The production allows students to express their creativity and is a fantastic opportunity for them to shine, build confidence, and create lasting memories, making it a highlight of the school year for both performers and audience members alike.

Music

Music plays a vital role in our students’ educational journey. They have the unique opportunity to collaborate with a specialist music teacher, which allows them to deepen their understanding and enhance their musical skills. In addition to regular classes, extension programs are available for those who wish to further explore their passion for music.

Senior School Band

LAUNCHING SOON!

We’re thrilled to announce that we are forming a senior school band! This is a great opportunity for students who love music and want to play together. If there’s enough interest, we plan to keep the band going!
