At Matarau School, we are dedicated to nurturing the potential of young minds and shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Our commitment is to provide students with the best possible pathway to secondary education, ensuring they are well-equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for future success.
Our Academic Pathways
We want to help every student find their own best path to Secondary School. This path focuses on their strengths, addresses any gaps, and boosts their confidence and personal growth.
By the time students get to Secondary, we want them to feel fully prepared for the challenges ahead, equipped with the skills and tools they need to take on all the exciting opportunities that await them.
In collaboration with parents, students are assigned to a rotation for Math and English that can include either Cambridge, NZC, or a mix of both.
Cambridge
Students can dive into the Cambridge program, focusing on Math and English. This two-year program is part of a three-year journey that encourages students to sharpen their skills. With modern teaching and engaging coursework, they’ll boost their critical thinking and gain a solid grasp of math concepts and English language arts.
NZ Curriculum (NZC)
The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) focuses on key skills that help students succeed, especially in Math and English. Skills like critical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial for both school and daily life. In Math, students learn problem-solving to handle real-life issues, while in English, they practise expressing their ideas and connecting with different texts.
Learning Support
Students thrive in personalised learning environments with small class sizes, usually under 15. This setup lets teachers focus on individual needs, giving customised support and encouragement. Students feel more comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussions that deepen their understanding. Teachers can closely track progress and provide timely feedback when needed.
