A Connected Community

Tuakana-Teina

Junior students have the opportunity to engage in buddy reading with senior students. Through these interactions, juniors learn to communicate effectively, collaborate, and establish friendships. As they connect with their senior buddies, juniors become more comfortable in the school environment and gain the confidence to seek help during playtime. This nurturing relationship fosters a strong sense of belonging within the school community.

Seniors can step up as leaders by working with younger students, whether it be through a coaching role, as a House captain, or as senior buddy roles in the classroom and playground. This allows them to set good examples, share what they know, and build a welcoming learning space. By mentoring, they help younger students tackle challenges, offer support and create a sense of community.

These interactions boost skills for everyone involved, like communication and empathy, and emphasise collaboration and shared responsibility.

Whānau

At Matarau, we recognise that strong communication with families is vital for the success of our tamariki. We encourage parents and whānau to engage actively in their children’s education through goal setting and open discussions. Involvement can include assisting with school events, reading together at home, or discussing classroom discoveries.

When families show interest in school, it enhances children’s enthusiasm for learning and boosts academic performance. By collaborating with parents and whānau, we foster a supportive environment for children to thrive in their early years.

Whānau Teams

In our school, each child is assigned to a Whānau Team, fostering a sense of belonging and community.

Each Whānau Team has a unique colour that tamariki proudly wear during events, such as swimming sports and athletics. These occasions promote friendly competition and boost school spirit.

Senior students take on leadership roles, guiding and supporting junior members to ensure everyone feels included.
